A View from the Serving Hatch – Sep 2024

An occasional blog by Alan Keen
Welcome to the first “A View from the Serving Hatch” for the 2024/2025 season. September saw a return to the regular Tuesday night meetings with 3 meeting taking place. Hopefully, you have already got back into the usual routines and have attended some, if not all, of our offerings this month.
September 10th meeting The was a “meet and greet” evening with a chance to introduce some of the changes that were agreed at the May AGM. The new subscription system and the amendments to the internal competition rules were explained. Alan Thorpe highlighted some of the programme events and members were able to collect their images from both our, and the YPU, Annual Exhibitions. For the main part of the evening Nick Collins presented DPIs of the Annual
Competition entries that were not seen either on the 23rd or 30th April.
September 17th meeting At this meeting we welcomed our first external speaker for the season, Derek Doar DPAGB, who gave a mono print presentation called “A Passion for Landscape.” Members treated to not only an extensive body of Derek’s work but also a few of Derek’s “secrets” for obtaining the perfect mono print. Derek also extended an offer to give advice to anyone wishing to contact him. His website, DDIMAGES, is also full of tutorials, hints, and tips as well as some impressive gallery work.
September 24th meeting In final meeting of the month Ray Brammall presented a series of Avs from this year’s Clay Cross Exhibition. This prestigious competition had entries from some of the country’s finest photographers and included work from Doncaster Camera Club Members. The evening gave an opportunity for members to discuss theimages as well as pick up a few ideas of the type of images that are currently “in vogue” with competition judges.
Next Month We have 5 meetings scheduled for October, 2 competitions and 3 external speakers:
1st October – Howard Tate – “Projects, Not Individual images”
8th October – Peter Yeo – “Save the Best till last!”
15th October – The Settle Trophy – an Inter club competition Judge Erica Oram
22nd October – Round 1 – internal competition – Judge David Gibbins
